DEMOLITION + DECONSTRUCTION
Demolition is a set of tasks involving structural dismantlement, site clearance, and environmental remediation. Demolition can involve the use of hydraulic equipment with specialised attachments, cranes, loaders, wrecking balls and in some cases explosives.
Construction and demolition waste is a significant contributor to all waste-to-landfill in the Auckland region. Estimates indicate that around 400,000 tonnes of demolition waste is land filled each year.
Deconstruction is the selective dismantlement of a building, specifically for re-use, re-purposing, recycling, and waste management. Buildings, like everything, have a life-cycle. Deconstruction focuses on giving the materials within a building a new life once the building as a whole can no longer continue. This promotes and supports environmental sustainability.
The ongoing productivity of our land in New Zealand, is important as it underpins our economic and social well-being as a nation. In addition to giving materials a new life cycle, deconstructing buildings helps to lower the need for new resources, as opposed to traditional demolition techniques. This in turn leads to energy and emissions reductions from the refining and manufacture of new materials, and additionally the solid waste from conventional demolition is diverted from landfills.
Midland Environmental are committed to using deconstruction methods, wherever possible to promote sustainability within a demolition project. We are also committed to recycling site products, and salvaging what can be reused and re-purposed from a building.
